Formative Assessment of EFL students' Speaking Skills in an upper-secondary vocational classroom

The thesis Formative Assessment of EFL students' Speaking Skills in an upper-secondary vocational classroom describes attitudes to assessment of three English language teachers at a Czech business academy from the perspective of formative assessment just before the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. The case study aims to show what happens behind the classroom door by providing a deep insight into the assessment practices of EFL learning at a Czech secondary vocational school. The theoretical part defines formative assessment as feedback which brings the learner valuable information concerning the knowledge and skills in the process of learning when it is still possible to work on improving the output; it explores different formative strategies in the context of communicative approach to EFL learning, namely Speaking Skills development. The empirical part builds on the qualitative data collection which consisted of several phases and methods: firstly, school documents were analysed to understand the assessment processes in general, followed by the semi-structured individual interviews with a headmistress and three EFL teachers. Means of communication and their use at schools for pupils with hearing impairment in Prague and Munich

The presented diploma thesis deals with the means of communication (sign language, signed language, written language, finger alphabet, etc.) used by teachers in schools for pupils with hearing impairment in Prague and Munich. The work is interested in the topic of related educational approaches, which schools, or teachers use, and what means of communication they prefer. Using observation methods and questionnaires, it wants to find out what or who leads the educators to the chosen communication means and what they think about their own communication competencies. In addition, it compares the current situation of this issue at the elementary schools for the hearing impaired in Prague and Bavarian Munich. The first chapter focuses on which kind of pupils are attending schools for the hearing impaired and what are the possibilities for communication. The second chapter deals with approaches to the education of pupils with hearing impairment. In addition to basic approaches (oral, total, bilingual) describes the approach by American linguist D. A. Stewart, which was developed for the needs of the classroom. Silence is silver, speech is golden. Developing speaking skills in current textbooks of Czech for foreigners

This thesis focuses on the opportunities for developing speaking skills in teaching Czech for foreigners at the B1 level. In its theory section, historical and contemporary approaches in language teaching are introduced with special attention given to speaking skills and communicative language teaching. Subsequently the thesis presents an overview of the present state of research in the field of speaking as a process and a complex skill and a classification of speaking activities. The requirements placed on the oral communication of the students at B1 level by the Common European Framework are also laid out. In the analysis, selected textbooks of Czech for foreigners are examined to determine what opportunities the textbooks offer for the development of speaking skills. At the conclusion of the analysis the respective textbooks are compared and improvements to existing speaking activities are proposed to meet the findings of the modern language teaching methodology.
Folk verbal art in the context of ethnolinguistics and its function in teaching Czech as a second language

Subject of the Diploma is a use of folktexts in Czech courses for foreigners. An education material draft is being submitted, based on communication approach to language teaching, connects language and socialcultural dimension through. Submitted education material is a calendar like that defines four seasons in the Czech Republic through their attributes, i. e. their essential characteristics, in the folktexts included, and supported by the folktexts also explains appropriate rituals, feasts and concepts of the seasons. All texts and information of the education material draft are chosen or adapted with respect to communication needs of the foreign language students and in order to introduce concepts and knowledge of the Czech geography, culture and cultural history.
